Windows 7 - Restoring entire hard drive (after a Hard Disk Failure)


If your windows Hard Disk has failed and you have previously created a System Image backup using Windows 7 built in backup ulitity, you can easily restore the backup to a brand new Hard Drive.

Replace the failed Hard Drive in your computer.


With the computer powered off:-
Remove the failed hard disk drive from your computer and put in a safe place.
Fit a new replacement hard disk in the computer, which is at least the same capacity of the original drive.
If your backup media is an external usb hard drive, connect the drive to the computer

Warning only proceed if your hard disk has failed and you have replaced the hard disk with a new drive.

Boot from your Windows Repair Disk (CD)


If you haven't created a Windows Repair Disk (Bootable CD), you can make one using any computer running Windows 7. Instructions on how to make a Windows Repair Disk can be found here.

Insert your Windows Repair Disk (CD) into your CD/DVD drive and turn the computer on. The computer should boot (start-up) from the CD, from there you can select various options for repairing your computer.

When the computer starts up from the CD you will be prompted to select your keyboard type

Click Next

A list of current installed operating systems will appear, you can use the repair tools to fix problems.
However, as we removed the failed hard drive and replaced it with a new hard disk, no operating systems will be shown. Select "Restore your computer using a system image ..."

Click Next

If your external hard disk (which contains the backup system image) is connected, the system image on the drive will automatically be found and selected
Note: your external Hard Disk may be shown as (C:) as the new drive hasn't been formatted yet.

Click Next

Additional options will be shown to format the new (replacement drive)
Note: your external Hard Disk will not be formatted as it contains the system image back up,
only the new replacement hard disk will be formatted (wiped).

Warning only proceed if your hard disk has failed and you have replaced the hard disk with a new drive.
Click Next

A warning will be displayed stating that All disks to be restored will be erased.
Please ensure that the original Hard Disk (failed drive) has been removed and that only the new replacement hard disk (blank Hard Disk) is in the computer.

Click Next

The restore process will take a while.

Once complete your computer will be restarted and your backup will be restored.
